Jamita E. Swearengen is the incumbent Shelby County Circuit Court Clerk and a Democratic candidate for re-election to the office. She currently holds the position, having been elected in August 2022 after serving as a Memphis City Council member from November 2015 until her resignation in August 2022. During her tenure on the council, Swearengen chaired the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee and served as vice-chair of the Housing and Community Development Committee. She also acted as a liaison for several key local entities, including the Civilian Law Enforcement Review Board, the Memphis Area Transit Authority, and the Memphis River Parks Partnership. Swearengen holds a Bachelor of Arts in Natural Science from LeMoyne-Owen College and is a graduate of Memphis Central High School. Her professional background includes work as a family engagement specialist and classroom educator within Shelby County Schools, as well as serving as Minister of Music at Mount Pisgah C.M.E. Church. A classically trained musician who studied violin, piano, cello, and vocal music, she is an active member of the Shelby County Democratic Executive Committee and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She is the daughter of the late Honorable James E. Swearengen and retired educator Mrs. Hattie Swearengen-Tuggle.
